I'm not usually drawn to books described as spiritual. This one came recommended by enough people I respected that I eventually gave it a chance.
Tolle's central argument is that most human suffering is created by the ego — not ego in the usual sense, but the deep structure of self-image and mental commentary that most of us have never examined.
The idea of watching your thoughts rather than being consumed by them sounds simple. Sitting with it is a different experience.
I came out of it thinking differently about a lot of things. That's about all you can ask from a book.
